Is there a difference between fragrance oil and essential oil?

Many luxury items, as well as brands that aim to evoke certain feelings, get their scents from oils. After all, smells have the power to take you back to memory land more quickly than anything else.

At The Mombati Company, we create fine scents for our artisan clients using fragrance and essential oils. Whilst each of these offers memorable scents, they differ in their properties, characteristics, and uses. You can find both with us because we are passionate curators of unique scents that add to your brand’s appeal.

Let’s define fragrance oils and essential oils

Fragrance Oils are lightweight aroma compounds created synthetically where highly concentrated compounds are mixed with subtle, or odorless carriers. Their uniqueness is the lightweight aroma compounds that allow them to break down and reach scent receptors.

Essential Oils are concentrated compounds extracted from natural plant matter. They are less concentrated hence carry intense and strong scents of the plant itself. They also carry more health benefits as they are pressed liquid particles of plants. They are also called “essentials” as they are authentic to the plant, flower, tree, or fruit that they’re extracted from.

Some of their defining characteristics are:

  1. 1. Their Composition is Different:

The essence of their distinctiveness is in how they’re produced. Essential oils are extracted from plants. Plants, flowers, trees, and fruits are pressed with specific equipment to produce essential oils.

Fragrance oils are products of chemical compounds where essential oils, carrier oils, resins, esters, absolutes, aldehydes, and alcohol are blended togetherScents based on fragrance oils don’t need plant matter which is why more variety is available in fragrance oils as compared to essential oils.

  1. 2. Their Shelf Lives Vary:

Essential oils, just by the fact of being extracted from natural resources, have a longer shelf life. At The Mombati Company, we offer only premium-quality oils. The standard shelf life of essential oils ranges between two to five years, depending on the plant matter. Some of the finer and more organic essential oils have a shelf life of about 15 years

Since fragrance oils are a product of multiple chemical and molecular components, their shelf life is not as reliable as that of the competing essential oils. Depending on the chemical properties of the material, our fragrance oils offer a shelf life of 12 months.

On the other hand, essential oils can evaporate faster than fragrance oils. Candles and other goods made with fragrance oils do not dissipate as fast and can be stored longer. We encourage our customers to cover their essential oil candles with lids to seal the scent.

  1. 3. They Are Both for Candles:

You can use both the varieties - essential oils and fragrance oils in your candles. We offer our artisan clients the opportunity to purchase fine quality products that work for them in recreating their range of candles.

Essential oils are less likely to create more long-lasting and intense scents per oil unit, compared to fragrance oil. This is primarily due to their nature. Essential oils are natural and not diluted with benign carriers. Fragrance oils are.

Fragrance oils offer a more intense scent and work beautifully with other compounds that go into creating luxury candles. We are fans of both oils but recommend use fragrance oils for specialty candles.

At a glance:

      * Fragrance oils are chemically created and essential oils are naturally extracted from plant matter
  • * Fragrance oils make for a better choice for candles and offer more intense aroma

  • * Essential oils have a longer shelf life because they are natural

  • * Fragrance oils offer more scents and the option to customize intensity and aroma. Essential oils are more concentrated and come in a limited variety.

  • * Essential oils are used in aromatherapy and have more health benefits. Fragrance oils don’t offer health benefits

  • * Essential oils cost more to extract hence are more expensive. Fragrance oils are made with a variety of compound hence the price range can vary from affordable to luxurious.

Both the natural oils are safe to use in your products and we at The Mombati Company are happy to guide you on which one will work better for your line of products. We are honored to have a large clientele that makes use of our essential oils and fragrance oils for their household and cleaning products, air fresheners, candles, cosmetics, and other beauty productsWe recommend all our artisans and partners make use of only the finest ingredients and are here to deliver just the same to you.
